The Journey

Katie B.

At 23 years old, I have spent most of my life being obese. I turned to food as comfort for events that were happening in my life when I was young. I was active throughout school; soccer, dance, swimming, but not enough to keep up with my complete lack of nutrition. I had tried so many things to get back on track - diets, nutritionists, you name it. Nothing seemed to work, or maybe I didn't really want it to. Food was my comfort and I wasn't ready to give that up. Eventually entering high school and then college, I let my weight control almost everything and my insecurities got the best of me.

It wasn't until February 2017 that I took a long hard look at my life and realized I needed a change. I wasn't happy. I was about to graduate college with a bachelors degree and had zero confidence at being successful, all because I let my weight dictate my life. I was too insecure and afraid of the judgement of others. I also have 3 nieces, ones that I want to be able to keep up with as they grow older as well as my own kids one day. At that point, I had also watched two very dear family members suffer from a multitude of health problems. I didn't want that to be my future.

I didn't like the road I was going down-something had to give. I was so nervous to start making a change, but asking someone I trusted for help made it a little easier. I started personal training sessions with Juan, continued taking Zumba classes with him and Maria, and a little bit later joined Level Red Boxing. I was taking a nutrition class in school as part of my degree, which gave me a completely different view on food and helped me change my diet entirely (don't get me wrong, I'm still game for tacos or pizza on occasion).  I went from being terrified to make a change to completely turning my life around.

It has been over 10 months since I've started my journey, and I've made more progress than I could have ever imagined. I have lost over 90 pounds and many inches. But more than that, I feel stronger than I ever have--both physically and mentally. More confidence, less fear, and the courage to face new challenges. I definitely could not have done this without the amazing people in my corner, encouraging me every step of the way and pushing me to face new challenges. Now that I'm here, I refuse to go back. I refuse to settle. Some days are harder than others. Some days the motivation just isn't there--no ones perfect. But I will continue to work hard, be better and be stronger. Because now, I am finally happy with the road I'm on.
